Set of Art Sales

Our friends over at One Kings Lane are emptying out their curated collections of art for the sake of beautifying our walls.  Lucky us!

Moves Like Jagger



"Jagger 1968" Diamond Dust Screen Print by Russell Young

Edition of 7. This hand-pulled acrylic paint and enamel screen print with diamond dust on linen.

ACTUAL diamond dust is covering the print image.  Amazing.  The work is signed on verso.  This large piece (5 feet by 4 feet) currently hangs in the Decoratum gallery in London.  There you can purchase the piece for its asking price of $32,500.   Hit me up if you're interested and we can arrange acquisition.  It would be such a fabulous conversation piece, no?

Paint Your Photos

I am thinking about trying a Paintapic in a new client's Living Room for much-needed wall art.  Paintapic is a service that will take your digital photo and turn it into a paint-by-numbers canvas, for you to paint and complete.  A very fun concept, I think.  I found them through a New York Times article, and have been mentally tinkering with a few projects for myself but never bit the bullet.  My downtown client, though, might be just the person to test the waters with this DIY art.

All you need is a digital photo, forty dollars, and some time on your patient hands to create a very personal masterpiece.  Bravo.

Back In It To Win It

My blogging fell off the face of the Earth, as did I.  But I'm back.  And Planet Earth has never felt better and looked more beautiful than than this week.  The crisp cool(er) air of early autumn finally strutted into New York and everyone has a subsequent smile on their face.  The hot soggy month of September did a number on our spirits and our footwear, but a slight weather change has made a huge difference in morale.

 Whitney Interior Design had a busy September, in Kentucky followed by Massachusetts, working with wonderful clients and their lovely homes.  I promised photos of the thrifty n' fast Lexington bedroom redecoration, and I'll be posting those later this week.  {Had to teach myself how to tweak some of the photos in post-edit.}  Photos of some victorious organizing projects in Cambridge will be posted soon, too.

• I somehow missed on my blogroll that this famous blogger is with child #5!  A million trillion congratulations to this wonderful woman and her Mr.
• Do you think that I would attend this solely for access to that amazing house? You bet your a$$.
• Are you kidding me with all the patina & texture & sexiness of this room?!?!
• I frequently re-read this post because, well, I need a ferocious giggle to get me through a rough patch.
• Jenny of MFAMB started abstract painting, which it seems like everyone is doing all of a sudden.  I like really really reeeeeally like these.
• Need a good housewarming/thank you gift?  Find these little beauties at various retailers. I saw them at Gracious Home in tons of prints/patterns and bet the votive jar would be wonderfully reused as a bud vase when the candle is burned through.

Getting Excited... and Elegant Living

I'm getting excited for the Antiques, Art & Design Show at the Armory!  Got my postcard reminder (and free admission for 2!) in the mail, and am marking my calendar!  I get so much inspiration at the Armory shows.  The cream of the crop bring their very best wares to present an insightful & stimulating display of the loveliest things you'd ever seen.  Can't wait!

Map Fad

Is the decorating with maps fad over?  Once Ballard and Pottery Barn and Home Decorators start framing maps and hanging them like art, you know its a mainstream idea.  But does that mean we have to start moving onto the next fad?

I think that the appeal of cartography-as-art is the personalization that can be achieved. You're from Oklahoma? Go find and old map depicting the state boundaries during the Land Run of 1889. Love to sail? Find nautical maps by the bookload and frame them for your powder room. Have a young astronomer in your house? Have galaxy diagrams wallpapered onto the kid's ceiling.

To avoid that overtly-contrived, generic store-bought feel, it's generally best to work with maps that matter to you.

And for this reason -- the seemingly endless options available -- the 'decorating with maps' practice may not be so easy to pigeonhole as "a fad."

All in all, I think it's fair to say that the map fad is indeed a fad.  But, it's a long-lasting fad because it can be so widely interpreted.  Lots of editorializing from the consumer can keep this fad from looking tired.  

The easiest way for you to incorporate a map into your decorating is to choose a map that has personal meaning to you.  Whether you frame it, decoupage it, wallpaper with it, cover a window with it or make a lampshade with it is up to you.  Keep it personal and it becomes authentic!

A Slice of Turkey

My husband and I were in Saratoga Springs, NY, cruising the downtown shopping scene when my eyes bulged out of my face at the sight of this amazing Turkish Bazaar.  A well-edited, organized shop, the gallery featured rugs, kilims, ceramics, suzanis, dresses, lanterns and intricately designed footwear!  Such fun.  I could have stayed in the shop for hours. 

Fabulous!  If you're ever in Saratoga Springs, you may want to get over to the gallery on Broadway for a Turkish shopping spree!
